Colonoscopy and Gastroscopy are performed as an ambulatory procedure at Long Island
Jewish Medical Center or North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. Gastroscopy may be
done in the office setting in selected patients. Flexible sigmoidoscopy is done in the
office. Gastroscopy involves the visual examination of the esophagus, stomach, and
duodenum. Colonoscopy is the visual examination of the large intestine
(colon).

Men and women above the age of 50 should have yearly rectal exams and
screening of stool for occult blood. Colonoscopy is the screening test of
choice for colon polyps and cancer in men and women over 50.
Abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, or weight loss should not be
ignored.
Women should not forget their yearly gynecological examinations and mammograms.
Do not forget your Flu vaccination.
